about

"Al Fasawz" is a 38-minute ambient soundscape inspired by the sound of waves on the beach in Rockport, MA. The track is algorithmic music, and is intended for relaxation and meditation. It was created from a fixed number of sawtooth waves of constant pitch and stereo position. The waves are continuously frequency modulated by control loops of varying lengths, resulting in complex fractional polymeter which gives an impression of self-similar but non-repeating structure. The loops were controlled via custom software written by the artist.

The track is designed to induce alpha brain waves (8-12 Hz), which can occur when you're calm, relaxed and not focused strongly on anything specific. The track's title is a pun: pronounced out loud it's "alpha saws," where alpha refers to the desired brain state and saws refers to the sawtooth audio waves used in the composition. The track is related to the EKTA project, in which the artist designed a biofeedback system to synthesize algorithmic music and visuals controlled by an EEG.
